Our shaggy orange friend was born from an experience: my co-founder Gregg was about to buy four full price tickets to a children’s museum in Florida when he had the frugal but bright idea to ask whether his hometown museum membership gave him any special rates at the museum in Florida. In fact, his admission was entirely free! And in fact, he learned, his local membership gives him free or discounted access to nearly 300 science and discovery museums around the country. So that got him to thinking: what else was he missing from his memberships and how many other people are oblivious?
Personally, I try to never buy anything online without a coupon. And quite honestly, I always wish I could do the same for brick-and-mortar purchases. When shopping online, there are so many of those “Visit us and we’ll give you 27 ½ different coupon codes to try out” sites and I’m such a tightwad that I’m often inclined to try them all.
But honestly, does it have to be this difficult to find a legitimate discount? And am I losing karma points by using coupon codes that weren’t really intended for me?
So when Gregg proposed that we create a service that helps regular people get the discounts they’re already entitled to from their memberships, I was intrigued. “Do you mean create a web site that gives people 42 coupon codes to try out instead of just 27 ½?” No, not exactly.
Most of us are members of something: AAA, AARP, USAA, Blue Cross Blue Shield, alumni and professional association, credit cards, grocery stores, and on and on. And many of those memberships entitle us to pretty sweet discounts at thousands of merchants for things we buy every day. But after talking to hundreds of consumers, it was clear that very few knew about these discounts and even fewer were actually getting them. In fact, 72% of consumers told us “I know I’m entitled to some discounts but I don’t know what they are or how to get them.”
And therein lies the birth of our furry orange friend. 175M Americans are members of 3 or more paid annual memberships and that translates to a crazy lot of perks and discounts that they should be getting, simply because they're entitled to them. Our goal is to help a good chunk of those people get what they deserve, stop overspending and of course, save time from not having to go through those 27 1/2 discount codes.
